The Route

The route was being planned using Bike Hub and Google Maps although I've since discovered ridewithgps.com which allows upload to Garmins so the suggested routes from Bike Hub have been imported to ridewithgps and edited to remove major roads, cycle paths and walking sections.

It took a while to go through each day and check that the roads are suitable - Google streetview handily showing muddy farm tracks, private roads blocked by gates and a river crossing that would have been interesting to say the least.

So as of 6th June these are the likely final versions of each day's route.

Day 1: Fishguard to Brecon - 89 Miles, 2400m of climbing - 6 to 7 hours riding
Overnight Accommodation - Old Castle Farm B&B

Day 2: Brecon to Chipping Norton - 99.5 Miles, 1770m of climbing - 7 to 8 hours riding.
Overnight Accommodation - Moat End B&B, Kingham

Day 3: Chipping Norton to Saffron Walden - 92 Miles, 1289m of climbing - 6 to 7 hours riding
Overnight Accommodation - Hall Farm, Chishill

Day 4: Saffron Walden to Felixstowe - 68 Miles, 714m of climbing - 4 to 5 hours riding

Total 349 miles with just over 6000m of climbing

The routes can be downloaded in various formats but the .tcx files seem to work well with my Garmin Edge500 to give turn-by-turn directions on the screen.

  1. The route was wonderful. I'm surprised that so few others look for this coast2coast. It's so good. It takes you on little-used roads that show Wales and England how they've been for 50 years or more. I loved it. There's some challenging hills to begin with. But if you can do 100 miles per week in training for 10 weeks say, then you can certainly do this route over this duration. Really missing cycling it now.
